if you played Jim Croce’s “Operator” for a zoomer would there be a single reference in the narrative that they could relate to? have they ever spoken to an operator? one that could look up a phone number for them? have they seen a matchbook? would they understand why people wrote phone numbers on them? would the operator keeping the dime make any sense at all? media preservation by itself can only go so far.
