the more i think about the more i believe that a key component to Scooby-Doo's enduring success is Velma; if not the character herself necessarily, tho she's great, then her presence as an alternative to Daphne's mainstream femininity.
if there was just one female character and her only trait was "girl" then it would just be a show for boys with token girl character to make it not gay.

with Daphne & Velma there is a range and broader appeal: anyone can find something to relate to in the cast (setting aside the racial dimension of an all-white cast)
