And again, even if you go with a ring mechanism which can easily be opened by the users, none of the mechanism *needs to be* metal. Not even the rings. There are some impressive thermoplastics now which can be made conductive only as needed. A spring/brush system could maintain contact between the pages and the rings if needed, or pogo pins could be used as I mentioned before.
