I suspect the easier way to do this would be shallow pogo pins or the like conducting up from a powered back cover. Whichever page doesn’t have another one on top of it pressing down is the one which turns on.

There's probably some way around it, and then there are only so many other issues to solve. And the thing in it's current state is already brilliant. People of every generation plug in their phones and laptops on exactly this type of plug every single day of their lives. Everybody understands this instantly. Sturdy, resilient, fool proof.
