It isn't, it's what you get when you mix R+Y+B paints. You usually don't get black or dark grey because they aren't actually a set of primary colours.
We've known that the eyes actually distinguish RGB and so they're the primary colours for light and the best starting point for a trio of subtractive colours is CMY since the nineteenth century, but the myth of RYB primaries remains strong.
