Today, the European Commission preliminarily found Meta in breach of the Digital Services Act for the addictive design of Instagram and Facebook. The investigation focuses on features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and the platforms’ highly personalised recommender systems. https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_26_1579

@brucelawson@social.vivaldi.net Well, they aim to make profit. Given that they aren't producing anything that adds value from which they can extract a portion as profit, they must set up ways that suck value out of the the social metabolism. Which means shifting overwhelming access to potential consumers from the traditional forms of media to capture their advertising revenue; to divert commercial revenue; and also state revenues with new surveillance products that facilitate repression of resulting dissent.
