I learned the other day, that I must assume MUCH less I know about the implications the "AI” bubble has when talking to others. A good friend of mine, well educated, PhD in Psychology, is o/c aware of psychological issues caused by "AI”. She was completely unaware of the absolute reckless and exploitative behavior of the industry. I only noticed, b/c she was complaining about how expensive new notebooks are and was VERY surprised why this is the case. For her “AI” was just a “free service”.

@tisba@ruby.social +1 What I find frighting: How few people know how much human labor (and labor exploitation) is buried in these "AI" systems.

@tisba@ruby.social yeah and most people don't understand how it was trained, they often say "oh I get it's stealing your jo…" NOOOOOOOO wait, before we start getting there, do you know how it's trained? do you know how data was acquired… and they go "uh? that's stealing", WAIT, there's more "wait, they got a free pass? there u go.

  • @tisba@ruby.social There's also a big Mack-Truck sized hole there. "Lower Artificial Intelligence Literacy Predicts Greater AI Receptivity" by Tully, Longoni, and colleagues https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/t9u8g_v1 Basically, tech companies WANT less AI literacy, so that people believe them more and think they're magical soothsaying boxes. The answer isn't abstinence (which fails EVERYWHERE its tried), but solid AI education. And with the paper, AI education is a solid path for people to use less AI tooling.

@tisba@ruby.social it is my conviction that we have a disproportionate positive halo effect on people with a PhD. So yes, we should assume a low level of awareness for everyone.
