Maybe? The Netflix doc mad a pretty convincing argument that they are sad, undereducated, and unaccomplished losers who are desperate to feel superior to something and to have something approximating real friends. I think it started as stupid shit and people with the most desperate need latched on because they had nothing else in there entire lives.
