This is bad because the "derogation" that allows this scanning is incredibly sloppy. There are no quality requirements for example, nor does it in any way involve legal checks and balances. Through SCANDALOUS tricks, despite parliament voting against it, the derogation was passed today. 2/

Thanks to a number of vigilant MEPs (like @bartgroothuis@mastodon.online) an amendment was accepted that protects our Signal and WhatsApp messages from this terrible legislation, for now. 3/
