Bonnie Tyler passed. Total Eclipse of the Heart was a timeless jam but for me it reminds me of one of the weirdest moments in my life - in hindsight.
In 7th grade I went to school with a girl who had cystic fibrosis. Her mom was a teacher and there was this sort of morbid acknowledgement throughout the class that she might eventually die from the disease. We liked the girl and she was a nice kid.
For the end of our 7th grade year, her mom choreographed a dance that we were all required to perform in.
It was set to a recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart.
We formed a giant circle around the girl in the gym while all of the other students looked on. She ran back and forth as though she was lost and there were some students dressed as ghosts sort of scaring her and turning her back. But that's not the weirdest part...
As the song crescendoed the tallest guy in our class - a guy named Ryan - came out from the locker rooms dressed as the grim fucking reaper. He parted the circle and walked up to the girl and touched her on the forehead and she "died."
It wasn't until today, when I heard about Bonnie Tyler, that I mentioned this to my wife, and she immediately recognized it for what an absolute mindfuck it was for a class of 7th and 8th graders.
Anyway, epilogue: the girl is still alive, married, and living a happy life. I don't think I'm scarred by what happened then but, really, who knows?
Anyway RIP Bonnie Tyler. And if you've never seen the "literal music video" for Total Eclipse of the Heart, I recommend watching it now.
