Today was a long, long day with nearly 600 kilometers covered in 7 hours, a lovingly prepared roadside breakfast, and, of course, a successful, incident-free radiation source transport. It took over two years to finally acquire this thing. You really need persistence to work in science...

  • This thing is from 1977 but has a half-life of 90 years. And while the initial activity of 11 GBq may sound like a lot, it only produces low-energy betas and even lower-energy gammas (and very few of those, but those are the ones we want). It's also like the ghosts in Super Mario: if you look at it from the wrong side, nothing happens. Definitely practical from a radiation safety point of view!
