"They're not even human." Doesn't matter who's saying it or who they are saying it about. This is a red flag. Yes, the "bad guys" are human. The "good guys" are human. The "elites" and the "regular folks" are human. Every social and economic class is made of humans. Rapists and pedophiles are human. Givers and heroes are human. Humans are full of beneficial stuff, harmful stuff, neutral stuff.

That doesn't mean accepting unacceptable behavior. It's necessary to have good boundaries. Consequences are important. Once we deny someone's humanity, we fling open the door to torture, internment, genocide. The one who denies the humanity of others debases and demeans themselves.

@springdiesel@spore.social I would argue that certain circumstances, like having a degree of resources where consequences are no longer a thing for you, that it is deletarious to your mental health, and capacity for empathy. But no, it doesn't make you not a human. It might make you act like not a human, though. Maybe we should intervene for their mental health, distribute those hoarded resources, and help them regain some of their "acting like a human". Also, maybe take away their cocaine and/or ketamine.

@springdiesel@spore.social The only bad guys who aren't even human are pathogens, externalizing corporations, lobbies including the military-industrial complex, polluti-OK, well, maybe "the only" was a bad way to start that list
