To answer your specific question, I personally think that's OK because it's an artist creating something new even if it is directly inspired by existing media. It's creative, thoughtful and requires time and skills that are not easy to learn. I imagine Disney might disagree though. A GenAI image doesn't have any of that, it's just creating a statistically plausible average for your prompt based on the material it's been trained on, and doing so causes harm.

    @bloor@bloor.tw And to expand on that because it is vague: There's a cost to existing creator livelihoods; to society at large as freely available info is taken away because it's too expensive to keep available; to the individual who get so into AI they can't comprehend that others aren't interested and become insufferable; to those who get in too deep and end up with some sort of psychosis and those who become so reliant on it that they lose their existing skills.
