Hōkan-ji (法観寺/八坂の塔) and Yasaka-jinja most probably evolved out of religious sites established by the Yasaka clan. The family were famed for breeding the finest horses, and likely took their name from the 8 local slopes onto which their tutelary god descended.

For many the Gion Matsuri began in 869 when the plague god of Kanshin-in was worshipped and paraded through the streets in order to cast out the epidemic. Far different from today's festival, this religious event was sporadic, and for many years held only in times of need. #京都
