👹🙏THE 'FIRST' GION MATSURI🥁🙌
On June 7th 869 (in the lunar calendar) Urabe-no-Hiramaro (卜部日良麿) took charge of the first Gion Goryō-e (祇園御霊会) -what would later be known as the Gion Matsuri- for Emperor Seiwa (清和天皇 850-881).

The Urabe clan (卜部氏), alongside the Imbe (忌部氏) & Nakatomi (中臣氏), were one of only a few families that specialised in divination & performed Shintō rituals for the imperial court. As a terrible plague throttled the city, the Urabe led efforts placate the gods of disease.
