There are glimpses of the original goryō-e in the current Yamaboko Junkō: stylistic versions of the halberds soar above the larger hoko floats, the Shijō-Kasa-boko (四条傘鉾) and Ayakasa-hoko (綾傘鉾) preserve the original style of parasols.

Imamiya-jinja's (今宮神社) Yasurai Matsuri (やすらい祭 - April 2nd) and Motogion Nagi-jinja's annual festival (元祇園梛神社 - 3rd weekend May) show us what the original Gion Matsuri probably looked like. Motogion Nagi-jinja's festival may well have been the prototype for Gion Matsuri.
