I introduced the offspring to the classic post-apocalyptic Mad Max movies recently (Road Warrior and Thunderdome), and I was surprised by the element of the movies for which I was unable to suspend my disbelief. A hippie commune running an oil refinery? Sure, why not. The BDSM bikie gang that just wants to rule the desert? You do you, boo. Generating an entire town's electricity from the methane produced from pigs? Downright plausible. Leather daddy ex-cop Jesus, saving the world one serious car crash at a time, with nary a seatbelt in sight? Give me moooore! But show me a supposedly stable group of people with no plausible way to feed them all, and you've lost me. Those oil refinery hippies don't have enough open space to grow food, and if they were trying it would be very visible. The BDSM bikies can loot their food, but that's a very finite resource and how many old trucks full of shelf-stable food will be laying around in the middle of the desert? The filmmakers try to address this, with Max's tin of dog food and the gyrocaptain's snake (as a line of dialog, "I trained him! I'm gonna eat him!" is without peer), but I just can't get settled with a movie when I'm spending all my mental energy wondering "but what are all those people *eating*?" I think working in agriculture has broken me.
