@andypiper@macaw.social I read (from a reliable source) that the general consensus from HMRC was that it wasn’t worth the cost for gov to make their own when the majority of businesses are using third party software for filings - either directly or via their accountants.

@andypiper@macaw.social I was self employed for years and it used to be really easy to submit my tax return on the HMRC website. In fact HMRC have generally always made interacting with them easy and I had a lot of respect for that. This unfortunately seems to be the opposite attitude. Forcing a third party into the system just introduces more failure states, decreases security, and makes the individual less aware of what they should be paying and why.
