@mattblaze@federate.social @SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange I don't know that American academia was ever a certain system or even a good system. We tend to forget this, given the mind boggling disruption of the last two years. Yes this is a horribly destructive way to transition. But I think the real question here is, "what are we going to do about it?". I'm considering everything from 'retiring' at 50 to move onto NGO work, moving abroad, institutional change making, and anything else I can think of. My mother went through academia in the 90s and the sexism was staggering (and she was white, cis, and hetero). When I went through we were over producing PhDs and think the current ratio is something like 10:1 PhDs to faculty jobs. The system was always fragile. I say this as someone who has had remarkable success as an early career academic. But my career does and will not look like a classic academic.
