@mattblaze@federate.social @ktoddbrown@social.coop I had a lot of reasons for retiring when I did, some of them very personal, but everything and anything to do with grants was pretty high on the list. Grants are why I didn't become an academic straight from grad school, and the reality when I moved, 22 later, was even worse than I had expected. But oh, I love students. (I have several ongoing research projects with former students.)

@SteveBellovin@infosec.exchange @mattblaze@federate.social My attitude has always been that I want to be somewhere I can ask interesting questions in ways that connect me to cool people. Some of those people are students and others are emeritus professors. Universities have traditionally housed the kinds of questions I find interesting which is why I'm here. Certainly possible this will change in the future and then I'll move on. I was burned hard enough by the American educational system that I'm not particularly enamored of classroom education. My first teaching semester was COVID spring so I'm pretty sure that didn't help either. I'll do it (teach) and I enjoy the community I help build but if I never formally taught again I would be just fine. Yeah, I might be a little bitter, burnt out, and jaded on review here.
