warning: long rant re: platner and lexi alexander. ig the lexi alexander stuff shouldn't be too surprising to me because IIRC she never really identified as a leftist or anything, her engagement with politics seemed to consist of attacking zionists & platforming palestinians - which is good by itself, yes, but you need an ideological framework to root it in. but still, like... you would think that the fact that platner bragged about signing up for the military specifically because he wanted to hunt people for sport in the middle east would concern *anyone* who cares about palestine. i don't really understand how you can be fine with one but not the other. it did seem that she might have been doing some kind of nazi accelerationism, hence her invoking of stauffenberg, an unrepentant nazi who tried to kill hitler because he was upset that germany was losing WW2. like maybe her hope was that platner was an unrepentant nazi *and* he would destroy israel. but still, like... there is a very big difference between letting two nazis kill each other and voting to give one of those nazis an enormous amount of political power i think the lesson with platner overall is that it's not enough to have good intentions and care about the right causes. you need to understand why you care about those causes. without principles, we're just a bunch of idiots dunking at each other for clout on platforms owned by ethnocapitalists. like i was very much a "as long as you care about the right things, you'll figure out the rest" kind of person and that was clearly very foolish of me because it's exactly that kind of attitude that has led us to platner's rise to power. (continued, sorry!) (not for too much longer though, i promise)

  • warning: long rant (continued) i think a big problem here is probably that social media is extremely individualist and socially capitalist and so we have a bunch of leftists and "leftists" with no real ideological framework shouting out whatever comes to mind and dunking on anybody they disagree with like i don't think it's reasonable for every single person to become super well versed in theory but i think if you're going to be using a platform to talk about politics you either need to do that work or you need to learn from people who have because this shit just does not work but that just... doesn't really work very well with platforms like bluesky / twitter where you *constantly* need to be posting because of how temporary everything you say is. even if you really should be somebody who is doing more listening & boosting than posting. the hyperaggressiveness of twitter / bluesky / etc also really doesn't help here because we're always on the attack and looking for vulnerabilities to dunk on people for. you can't really learn and have honest conversations under those conditions. it's a perfect storm to create reactionary leftism.
