I'm not trying to dunk on these two people in particular, this is a common sentiment I see a LOT Iwata was not a uniquely gracious CEO and that's why he took a pay cut rather than lay people off, he did it because that's how Japanese labor laws work. CEOs here aren't massively overcompensated like in the US The lesson here is not to wax nostalgic over This One Good Guy but to join a union and kick down doors and change society for the better. There are more of you than there are of them

    I don't mean to shit on Iwata. From everything I've seen and heard about him, he seemed like a lovely man who did care deeply about the games and culture at Nintendo But let's not kid ourselves. He didn't take a pay cut because he loves his workers, he did it because he had to, because those are the laws and protections that labor unions here fought and bled for. The way Westerners, even people who are in labor unions!!, get so romantic about The One Good CEO is like. embarrassing, lmfao
