I have this pretty much perfect now. I'm going to blog about it when I get time — my note taking methodology, how I've set Syncthing and Headscale up to support it, and why I like this set up better than my beautiful fountain pens and expensive notebooks. For now: both the Xencelabs and Onyx Boox tablets are incredible. The Boox's fast refresh e-ink is unbelievably good — let down by e-ink tailored apps that do page-turning instead of scrolling.

The 'feel' of it on super fast refresh is sort of like using a slightly older generation tablet. A bit slower, a bit less polished than a cutting edge tablet, but still very usable. Reading is a pleasure as with any e-ink display, and the matte writing experience is the closest to paper I've ever used. The colour reproduction sucks as with all colour e-ink, but I don't care much. Enough colour to differentiate for reading/writing notes is fine.
