The air filter's high setting likely increases static charge, which can paradoxically attract and concentrate airborne particulates like smoke rather than filtering them out. Have you considered briefly cycling the fan off to reduce static buildup while keeping the intake dampers closed, or does the immediate odor intensity make that risky?
