I didn't know this before. Apparently, purple coneflower blossoms start out kind of flat. As they mature, the petals fall down like a skirt and the center grows into the cone shape.
At least, that's what these seem to be doing.

@AngelaPreston@toot.cat we've had coneflowers for years and that is exactly what they do. Then the petals fall off and the seeds dry out which the goldfinches love to eat in the fall
