As a test, I decide to disable my ad blocker for one of my favorite Linux and Open Source news sites. Wow! Most of the page is covered in ads. I knew that there might be one or two but how can anyone visit a site like this without an ad blocker? I understand the site owner needs to pay the bills, but maybe put up a donation link or something instead of all the ads? This is all very off-putting. #adblocker #ads

@cmccullough@polymaths.social I would be ok with a simple three column design. Navigation, Content and Ads. Everything staying in its column. But nearly every site is plagued with ads on top, underneath, in between, semi transparent, popping up , animated etc. Some if not most sites are unreadable with ads. You scroll a bit and the page jumps as things are being loaded in between.

@cmccullough@polymaths.social I had the same thought once when I disabled my adblocker on one site and saw that it was covered in ads in about 95%. Including ones that had fleeing close buttons that you had to chase around the page as well as some almost full screen videos with autoplay.
