What I would say though for them is to read https://ente.com/blog/reflections-on-trusting-trust/ to see their perspective on the decision to be US based instead of boldly assuming. For encrypted photo backups hardly any of them are actually good or dedicate so much into being other things. If it’s nothing else, any encrypted cloud storage with photo backup support would do. Proton Drive at least has…something. Filen has a photo viewer with some basic functions better than Proton. Only reason I didn’t mind what they wrote was that Ente’s self hosting is so incredibly simple (1 line execution for entire setup) that the nightmare itself is actually choosing whether you want to host it locally or set it up on a VPS.
