Shinsen-en (神泉苑) was the imperial palace's pleasure gardens. Although little remains, when created in 794 it stretched 516m N-S and 252m E-W. Positioned south east of the Greater Palace (大内裏), the gardens played an important role in the creation of the Gion Matsuri. #祇園祭

  • Goryō-e (御霊会) was a ritual to appease vengeful spirits, in particular 6 figures (later 8) of noble blood that had been wrongfully punished by the court. Through such ceremonies it was believed that malevolent spirits could be transformed into protective ones. #Japan #Kyoto
