gender identity is when you define f(x) = x and compute f(gender)
so if anyone ever says "she identifies as a woman" but doesn't also say "bipeds identify as having two legs" they're confused about what the identity function means

"identifies as" is (at least in my experience) a from of the verb "to be" that carries the additional message of "I think they're lying but I'm not allowed to be overtly bigoted on TV"
