We are taught so little about recent history in American schools. I learned more about the Aztecs, the Ottomans, and the Roman Empire than I did about anything in the US, in spite of taking a class nominally about US history. I want to say we went deep on a few topics in that class, rather than covering breadth, because I liked and respected our teacher, but that's not true. We didn't learn history in that class, we learned a framework for writing essays and some basic skills for analyzing historical documents. These were Useful things to learn! But they weren't US history.
