There seem to be 3 main lenses to the “we can do this” discourse on decarbonisation:
1. We need governments and transnational businesses and institutions to act. (In ways they are structurally incapable of and extreeeeeemely resistant to.)
2. We *are* doing this. Just look at the rollout of solar and wind. (But don’t look at the massive mismatch with scale and time or at any of the supply chain dilemmas.)
3. We are most definitely not doing this. But we can and must radically address demand.

People recognising that they cannot achieve global impacts, and working locally to build a low energy resilient community in their locality, knowing that that will only work if millions of other people, with no effective coordination, also build low energy resilient communities in their localities. Which is incredibly unlikely to work, but it's a way of avoiding despair.
