Early this morning, activists began blocking one of the main access roads to the conference venue in Erfurt, where the far-right AfD party is due to hold its conference. Protesters from across Germany have travelled to the city in an effort to stop the conference.
The AfD became one of the largest parties in the 2024 election in Thuringia. Elections will be held next September in neighbouring Saxony-Anhalt.
