In Plato's philosophy, the physical world is copies of eternal ideals existing in a higher, non-perfect material realm. Gensokyo fits this neatly as the ideal realm of fantasy, physically real within its boundaries, metaphysically defined by illusion and forgotten myths. That's so neat.
