There are a lot of times where the reason I don't walk to a certain place is because it would be too dangerous, or because the only safe route would be across a cornfield. (Cornfields are one of the few exceptions to the rule that you're allowed to walk on any land in Sweden) Distance plays a role, but when the next bus is in two days, walking for hours is often not an unattractive option.
