The reason for that, IMO, is that the “none” people are usually in the camp of “I don’t practice any religion” vs “I despise every religion”; so it becomes like having a vegetarian option in a menu, it is good for the vegetarians and should not offend any reasonable omnivore. The problem of course is the unfairness you point out, added to the fact that most religious people that get involved in these political fights are not in the “I am happy there is a vegetarian option for me”, instead they are usually in the camp of “I am a vegetarian therefore YOU should not eat meat” PS: the vegetarian vs omnivore comparison is just for examples, I know eating meat is bad for the environment and we should all reduce/eliminate it.

    Religious nones are mainly non-denominational Christians. Plenty of them attend a local non-denominational church, I'm sure.
