By moving the antenna to one focus of the ellipse, where it actually belongs, we should now get a COMBINED Doppler shift. So there are no longer separate transverse and longitudinal shifts, but just the combined shift due to the relative motion of the electromagnetic waves. They move not only outwards from the antenna, but also inertially along with it. It is simple as that. Photon theory, for one, ought to require this. Michelson-Morley is explained.

    @chemoelectric@masto.ai You're talking about "emission theory" ("The substance then moves inertially along with the antenna"), but you're not doing calculations consistent with that. If you move along at speed v shooting bullets shot with speed c at a frequency f, then in front of you the bullets will arrive with frequency f * (1+v/c) and behind you with frequency f * (1-v/c). You can work this out with a simple geometric demonstration. Transversely, by the same geometric approach you can see that you will get no change in frequency. Longitudinally you get the best distinction when the source approaches c. Aether theory predicts that frequency as the source closes with the detector will blow up very fast; emission theory that it will approach 2x; relativity that it will grow unboundedly but much slower than aether theory.
