Easiest way to get people to use an app is not to be available on anything else. I onboard new users every month even businesses, but you need a good excuse that people will understand even if they dont love it. For me, it's a Linux phone with a cheap internet-only plan (meant for tablets and modem) so no Whatsapp or legacy unencrypted call minutes or outbound SMS. Once people realise DC or whatever app is the only way to reach you, they will use it if they really needed to communicate with you. I just hand out a business card with my DC QRcode invite and let them decide at their own convenience when/if they'll join.
