@therainingmonkey@toot.wales You can go "Create profile" - "use other server" - "use classic email as relay", and in advanced options disable "enforce encryption on all relays". You can then receive and write (cleartext) emails and anyone with an email address. Own email servers, or big email providers can also be used. However, all default onboarding paths lead to strict end-to-end encryption, and the use of #chatmail relays. Mass-users need to have fail-safe onboarding and a fully working experience.

@delta@chaos.social It might still be possible, but it's definitely discouraged and the app now makes it extremely difficult to just send an email to an email address. My ideal chat app would be a fork from just before v.2, which was perfect for sending emails with a chat-like interface and opportunistic encryption with autocrypt.

@delta@chaos.social > Mass-users need to have fail-safe onboarding and a fully working experience. I know this argument's been lost, but by (effectively) losing compatibility with classic email most of my contacts haven't moved to secure, private comms but to Facebook Messenger. At least mail with autocrypt was private when both participants wanted it to be. By moving away from email, Delta Chat has become just another app that my friends won't install because none of their other friends use it.
