Consider mechanical watches. A Seagull movement (used in low-end counterfeit watches) and a Patek Philippe movement do basically the same thing: limit the discharge rate of energy in a spring to X ticks per second, then use fixed gear ratios between ticks, seconds, minutes, hours, and maybe days or weeks. Spend some time understanding the Patek Philippe and you can see evidence of the care in both the design and the assembly. It’s clearly artful in ways which the Seagull isn’t.
