Can we please stop treating blind people like we’re fucking invisible the second we’re with someone else? I don’t know what it is about a white cane that makes people suddenly decide the person standing next to me has become my spokesperson, but it’s exhausting. You’ll ask them what I want, them where I’m going, them if I need help—while I’m standing right fucking there. I’m blind. That’s it. My hearing still works. My voice still works. I can answer my own questions, make my own decisions, and have my own conversations. And before anyone says, “I was just trying to help,” no. Talking around me isn’t helping. Treating me like I can’t speak for myself isn’t helping. It’s patronizing as hell. It’s wild how often I have to remind grown adults that blindness affects my eyes, not my ability to communicate. It’s honestly one of the most infuriating parts of existing in public.
