@technomancy@hey.hagelb.org @mattly@hachyderm.io This sort of s#!t is why I don't allow appliances to access my network. Won't buy anything that has to phone home to work. I don't think I'm missing out on anything, either.

@n1xnx@tilde.zone good luck trying to find one these days I said this elsewhere, but You know, this particular dishwasher was at the time the recommended pick of multiple review outlets; and nowhere did any of them mention, nor did any of the pre-available marketing material or anything my partner could find online, the fact that running just the rinse cycle or the self-clean function required an app to make it work Shit, it wasn’t even connected to the internet until my partner was trying to figure out how to do just a rinse cycle. She’s very sensitive to smells and apparently some of the dishes one time didn’t come out smelling quite as clean as normal. Thus, the damned thing went on the guest network If we had a review culture that cared about these things, if we had a functioning regulatory body to bring criminal charges against companies like BrightData, or to penalize companies for malfunctions that cause damage, perhaps this wouldn’t have happened. I want to go to there

@n1xnx@tilde.zone @technomancy@hey.hagelb.org @mattly@hachyderm.io we, begrudgingly, bought a new washer-dryer the other month and the damn thing's default wash mode is "AI", and I could not get any info out of the store whether that's marketing speak for "it weighs the laundry to determine cycle times" or if it's actually sloppified. It has normal modes as well or else I wouldn't have bought it, but every other button on it says to connect it to the app for smart controls (the info that time-delayed washing is available sans app is hidden deep in the manual). And it's not just bluetooth (which would suffice for the advertised purpose of programming timing and analysing your washing habits) – no, it wants your wifi password! For a washer dryer!!
