I have, in recent years, begun acquiring old textbooks from University Library sell-offs. They're generally a bit worse for wear, making them cheap. They give up information about how they were used. Which pages are well thumbed? Who left a pencil note? Exactly where did the spine crack?
For example. My copy of "Exploring Computer Science with Scheme", by Oliver Grillmeyer, 1998. It came from the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz and falls open thus:
