Mistakingly taking the Shirakawa to refer to a large river, the man said that it has been dark when the passenger boat passed through and so he couldn't see much.
In reality the Shirakawa is little more than a shallow stream, unable to support passenger boats...

Shirakawa more commonly refers to the bustling area of Gion, once filled with inns and tea houses. "Shirakawa yofune" (白川夜船) is used to call out someone for their boast or bluff, or to describe someone talking on a topic they have no knowledge of. #idioms #Japan #Kyoto #京都
