this is the most conflicted ive ever felt while reading a vn (i'm sick at home with strep throat, so here i am reading another fucking vn lol) if you knew me, and knew my interests and personal history, and wanted to write something -- create something -- JUST for me, it would probably look something like this. a denpa*, indie, visual novel about finding ones self during music school. i mean, in terms of "writing for a niche", you're not so much writing for a niche as it feels like you're writing for ME in particular. *I say denpa as a shorthand here. this genre is something in need to write about more -- and that others need to write about more -- as its still in its infancy. it IS denpa, certainly, but it's a nascent subgenre, with the principal exemplar being LiL. it's a denpa, but presented as a meta-commentary on visual novels as a whole (a bit like the thesis of Totono, but with 13 years of hindsight experimentation behind it). in addition, it places -- invariably -- the production of art at its core (presented as an offset to the Denpa-ness). There is a balance in the writing of "broken communication" and "fixing communication". Damage and healing, stagnation and movement. it's very much MORE inspired by western post-modernism than by japanese visual novels (most specifically Wallace and Danielewski, i find). but yes. this genre. "new denpa" ? "post denpa" ? "meta denpa" ?
