The "hieroglyphics wall" was a famed backdrop in legendary photographer Herb Greene’s San Francisco apartment and studio on Baker Street in the 1960s. It became an iconic visual hallmark of the Haight-Ashbury psychedelic music scene, used in portraits of stars like Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, and Grace Slick. The enigmatic symbols were drawn in felt-tip pen directly on the wall by Greene’s former roommate, who had a background in Egyptology. 📷 Grace Slick photographed by Herb Greene in 1966.
