Everything about these semi/centennial celebrations makes me feel like this isn't America's Birthday but more like America's Yom Kippur: As my Jewish friend describes the holiday: a solemn day-off to for atonement and repentance upon one's crimes. Crimes against oneself, ones family, ones neighbors, and most of all, one's crimes against God.
