When brands were reliable -- which isnt true, that's a fiction -- really, when the escalation towards financialization snd pure extraction was on the flattish end of the curve, the degradation in quality much slower, so eg. CRAFTSMAN brand tools remained good for decades, so s practical truism of "craftsman brand good" held for decades. So for decades it was reasonable to shop by brand and price. The feedback loops of reviews, word of mouth, etc still worked. Slowly all those long lived brands hollowed out. Shit goes bad seemingly overnight. Its one thing to walk into s retail store and put your hands on good tools or water tanks or whatever, and assess for yourself. Hmmm maybe the sight unseen til bought nature of the Internet added to the deceit. Whatever, its all gambling now.
