@vinh@mastodon.ie @Lightfighter@infosec.exchange Maybe, but Dickens' writing personalizes it and makes it harder to sweep under the rug. I question if history books would cover some things if not for a body of fiction that reported it. For example would work houses.

  • @geos@toot.community The common people and their conditions don't often make an appearance in history books. At best you get a side mention of the impacts on the population, then back to the story. I find myself often pausing reading and imagining myself in the situation being described in order to get a feel for what it may have been like.
