Okay, so it's bad. I was concerned that the reporting I was reading was too sensationalist. I now believe that even some of the sensationalist seeming pieces I read were perhaps not extreme enough. A dude was actually sentenced to 30 years in prison for moving a box of magazines. These people were convicted for "material support of terrorism" for the crime of exercising freedom of the press. Most of the people convicted protested at an ICE prison, some of them also brought many guns, one of the people with a gun shot at a member of the president's secret police. I'm not here to argue the merits of their actions or decisions, but to talk about the charges.

1) people who dispersed when ordered to disperse were still convicted of terrorism. Free speech and freedom of assembly be damned. If I'm reading this correctly they were charged with (but not convicted of) attempted murder. 2) a person who did not attend the protest was convicted for "corruptly concealing a document and conspiracy to conceal documents" The documents in question were all entirely legal, as far as I can tell (again, free speech, freedom of the press be damned) and it does not appear that they were in any way considered evidence of a crime. I can't find a reading of this that isn't "we'll come for your family too." Texas, as far as I can tell, is fully and openly embracing fascism.
