Ok, so I got it to display the way I want, but - yeah, the lines going to the lower sections can overlap the upper ones. Ugh
I kinda wonder if constraint layout would be nice for this (with layout files just having VFL lines)
but also I don't really want to deal with constraint layout

Here specifically this would work too, but it's hard to make it generic - if not impossible
